This fine generously-proportioned late Victorian semi-detached house is a “protected structure”, which was until recently divided into bed-sit accommodation. Luckily much of the detail original to the house has survived. The owners needed to install new services throughout the building, comprising kitchen, bathrooms, utility room, electrical, plumbing and heating works. They also wished to adapt the house to suit the needs of a modern family, so while the main rooms to the upper-ground for provided gracious reception spaces, the lower-ground floor needed to be opened up internally and connected to the garden.
This design re-organises this lower-ground floor removing many structural walls, connecting the living and kitchen/ dining spaces. New window openings to the west-facing side maximise the natural lighting available, and new glazed double doors to this side at lower ground floor makes a more appropriate informal entrance into the centre of the house. 2 sets of new french doors provide better access to the rear garden, and a new roof-lit extension provides guest accommodation.
New heating and plumbing services, with solar collectors concealed in the roof valley, are located in a plant room. Externally, the original red brick and ornate stucco frieze are to be restored and the sliding sash windows renewed and overhauled.
